Ben Roethlisberger - tool

I've been one of Roethlisberger's defenders over the years.  Folks give this guy so much shit, and a lot of it's deserved.  But, folks also tend to ignore the fact that this guy's played at a top five QB level for like a decade.  That ain't easy to do.

People think the Steelers are about the D and running backs who destroy other D's.  True, but imagine how bad the Steelers would have been without Ben.  Or, imagine what they'll be like say, oh, next year without him?

But a lot of the criticism Ben gets is because Ben can't get out of his own way.  He's a big huggable dummy bear who speaks as if he doesn't realize the impact of his words to the rest of humanity.  This gets to another of the (very real) problems people have had (in particular, teammates) with Ben: He's not a leader.  Roethlisberger does not lead the locker room, he's just kind of there.  It's how he can say things like this, via PFT:

“So did they screw up the pick?” Roethlisberger said. “Or was he not as good as they thought? I don’t know, and I feel bad, because Josh puts a lot of work in.”

“I wouldn’t think they’d get rid of Mason, keep Dobbs and Landry,” Roethlisberger said. “I wouldn’t think. Maybe they’re trying to trade me away or something, I don’t know.”

Ben says he's going to retire, and soon.  As so his team drafts a QB.  Ben doesn't like that.  Uh, does Ben realize what he's saying, how dumb it sounds?  Apparently not.

Last year I predicted the Steelers were one or two horrific games away from imploding.  They proved me wrong, in a big way.  But I'll still just stand by this prediction for the upcoming year.  Tomlin (who I like) is the glue holding this disaster together.  Dan Rooney, RIP, is not there anymore to referee the egos of this team and its town.  I predict the Steelers are one or two horrific games away from imploding.  A QB controversy will not help.
